Job Summary

 

The Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining company vehicles and heavy equipment to ensure safe and reliable operation. This position supports field operations by performing preventative maintenance and repairs on fleet vehicles, directional drills, backhoes, mini excavators, micro trench saws, trailers, and other construction equipment. The Mechanic works under the direction of the Shop Foreman and plays a critical role in minimizing downtime and maintaining productivity.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Perform preventative maintenance and scheduled service on company vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and diesel engine issues.
  • Repair and maintain directional drills, backhoes, mini excavators, micro trench saws, trailers, and support equipment.
  • Conduct inspections to identify worn or damaged components and recommend repairs.
  • Perform engine repairs, brake work, suspension repairs, hydraulic system troubleshooting, and electrical diagnostics.
  • Weld and fabricate parts as needed to support repairs.
  • Maintain accurate records of repairs, services performed, and parts used.
  • Assist with maintaining parts inventory and notify Shop Foreman of needed supplies.
  • Ensure all equipment meets safety and operational standards before returning to service.
  • Respond to field service calls when equipment breakdowns occur on job sites.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
  • Follow all company safety policies and OSHA regulations.
  • Communicate effectively with the Shop Foreman and operations team regarding equipment status.

 

 

Education and Requirements

 

  • 2 years’ experience working with utility construction equipment preferred.
  • Must provide own tools.
  • Proven experience as a diesel mechanic, heavy equipment mechanic, or fleet mechanic.
  • Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and heavy equipment repair.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and schematics.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Welding and fabrication experience preferred.
  • Own set of tools required.
  • Valid driver’s license required; Class A CDL preferred.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment drug screening and Level 4 background screening.
  • High school diploma or GED; technical certification preferred.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to lift up to 80 lbs. from floor to above head.
  • Ability to stand and work on feet for extended periods.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, and work in confined spaces.
  • Climb ladders, scaffolding, and lifts.
  • Willingness to work extended hours and occasional weekends if needed.

 

Working Conditions

 

  • Ability to work in extreme heat and cold weather conditions.
  • Exposure to loud noise and moving mechanical parts.
  • Exposure to dust, fumes, oils, and other contaminants.
  • Indoor shop environment and outdoor job site environments.
  • Emergency repair situations that may require travel to job sites.
